Volunteer with Us: How Giving Back Can Fill Your Cup (and Look Great on Your CV)

Stay connected to your community
At Tumut & District Neighbourhood Centre Inc, we believe that our greatest strength lies in our people. Whether you are looking to gain new skills or simply want to find a meaningful way to spend your retirement, volunteering with us is a powerful way to make a difference.
When you give your time to our community, you aren't just helping us keep the doors open, you are "filling your cup" with social connection, purpose and a sense of belonging.
What you'll find when you join our team
Volunteering is a two-way street. While the Tumut community benefits from your generosity, you gain access to a supportive environment that prioritises your wellbeing.
- A Sense of Belonging: Join a group of like-minded individuals who care about Tumut and the surrounding districts.
- Skill Building: Learn practical skills across our Op Shop, community activities and day-to-day centre support.
- Mental Health Support: Staying active and engaged is one of the best ways to combat isolation and improve your mood.
- A Welcoming Environment: Our centre is a safe hub where diversity is celebrated and everyone’s contribution is valued.
Boost Your Career and Your CV
Gain real-world experience in a professional setting
If you are a student, a job seeker or someone looking to change careers, volunteering is one of the most effective ways to build a standout resume. In today’s competitive job market, employers are looking for more than just qualifications; they want to see initiative, community spirit and soft skills like teamwork and communication.
Build your professional profile
When you volunteer with Tumut & District Neighbourhood Centre Inc, we treat your contribution with the respect it deserves. We offer opportunities to develop skills in:
- Administration and Customer Service: Help us manage the front desk, assist with the digital computer kiosk or guide people through information and referrals.
- Retail and Inventory: Gain experience in our Op Shop, where you'll learn about stock management, cash handling and customer relations.
- Community Activities: Help with practical day-to-day support across community activities, food relief and the community garden.
Volunteering can help you build confidence, strengthen your communication skills and add meaningful community experience to your CV.

Active Retirement: Staying Connected and Purposeful
Fill your days with meaning and friendship
Retirement is a significant life transition, and for many in our community, it can sometimes feel a little quiet. Volunteering offers the perfect antidote to the "post-work blues" by providing a structured, meaningful role that keeps the mind and body active.
Health and happiness in the garden
Our community garden project is a favourite among our retiree volunteers. You can help us maintain the raised garden beds that support our food relief efforts. It is a therapeutic, low-impact way to stay physically active while enjoying the fresh air and the company of others.
Research across Australia has shown that seniors who volunteer report lower rates of depression and anxiety. By sharing your life experience and skills with younger generations, you aren't just giving back, you are staying sharp, healthy and vital.

Flexible Ways to Help
Find a role that suits you
We understand that everyone comes to volunteering from a different place. The best way to get started is to talk with our team about your interests, availability and the kinds of tasks you would enjoy most.
Students and Community Members
Whether you want to build experience, stay active or give back locally, there is a place for you here. From helping with our digital kiosk to assisting in the Op Shop or joining community activities, every contribution matters.
Find Your Role at the Centre
Where do you fit in?
Our services are broad, and that means our volunteer roles are too! You don't need to be an expert to start; we provide the induction and training you need to feel confident.
The Op Shop
Our Op Shop is the heart of our material aid service. As a volunteer here, you’ll help sort through donations, style the shop floor and assist customers in finding a bargain. More importantly, you’ll be on the front lines of providing essential clothing and household items for people in need.

Information and Referral Support
Do you have a knack for navigating paperwork or a passion for helping others feel welcome? Our general support roles involve helping the coordinator with information and referrals, assisting people to access the digital kiosk and supporting everyday centre activities.
Food Relief, Garden and Community Activities
Volunteers are needed to help with food relief, pack grocery bags, maintain the garden beds and support community activities around the centre.
