Tax Help Tumut 101: A Beginner's Guide to Getting Your Return Done for Free

News | 19 June 2026
Stay connected with local support
Tax time is fast approaching, and for many of us, the thought of lodgement brings a bit of unwanted stress. Whether you are navigating the system for the first time or you simply find the digital forms a bit daunting, we want you to know that you don't have to do it alone. At the Tumut & District Neighbourhood Centre Inc, we are proud to offer the free Tax Help program to support our community during the busy tax season.
This guide will walk you through everything you need to know about getting your tax return finished for free, right here in Tumut. We’ve designed this programme to be simple, accessible and completely confidential, ensuring that everyone in our neighbourhood has a fair chance to stay on top of their finances without the high cost of a professional accountant.
What is the Tax Help programme?
The Tax Help programme is a long-standing initiative supported by the Australian Taxation Office (ATO). It is designed to help eligible people with simple tax affairs. Instead of trying to figure out "what goes where" on your own, you can sit down with one of our trained and accredited volunteers.
Our volunteers aren't just experts; they are members of your community who give their time to make life a little easier for others. They are trained by the ATO each year to help keep up to date with current rules and rebates, so you can feel confident that your return is in good hands.
Check if you are eligible for free assistance
Before you book your appointment, it is important to check whether you meet the current ATO criteria for this free service. The programme is generally for people with straightforward tax situations.
Simple tax affairs
In general, Tax Help is intended for people whose tax returns are relatively simple. This often includes income such as:
- Wages and salaries
- Australian Government payments
- Pensions or annuities
- Interest from bank accounts
- Dividends from shares within ATO guidance
When you may need other tax support
Some tax matters are more complex and may fall outside what Tax Help can cover. Depending on current ATO guidance, you may need different support if you:
- Run your own business or work as a sole trader or contractor
- Own a rental property or have sold an investment property
- Receive foreign income
- Receive royalties or trust distributions
- Have capital gains tax matters or other more complex tax issues
If you aren't sure where you fit, give us a call. We can help you check whether Tax Help is the right option for your needs or help point you in the right direction.

Why visit the Tumut & District Neighbourhood Centre?
When you come to see us at 173 Wynyard Street, Tumut NSW 2720, you aren't just visiting a tax office, you are visiting a community hub that has been supporting the local community since 1979. We believe that financial stress shouldn't be something you carry on your own.
A safe and friendly environment
We know that talking about money can feel private and sometimes a bit embarrassing if you've fallen behind. Our centre is a judgement-free zone. Our volunteers are here to listen, support, and advocate for you. Whether you are an elder in our community or a young person lodging your very first return, we treat every visitor with the same respect and care.
It is completely free
There are no hidden fees or charges for our Tax Help service. We are a community-based organisation, and this programme is part of our commitment to community strengthening and empowerment. Saving the cost of an accountant means more money in your pocket for the things that matter, like groceries, bills or family activities.
Your Tax Help Checklist: What to bring
To make sure your appointment goes smoothly and your return can be lodged on the spot, you will need to bring a few things with you. Having your paperwork ready to go helps our volunteers get through the process quickly.

Essential items for your appointment
- Your myGov login: You will need your username/email and your password. Please make sure your mobile phone is with you so you can receive the SMS security code.
- Tax File Number (TFN): If you don't have it on hand, an old notice of assessment or a pay slip usually has it listed.
- Bank Details: Your BSB and account number so the ATO knows where to send your refund!
- Income Statements: Most employers now lodge these digitally through Single Touch Payroll, but if you have paper copies or summaries from Centrelink, bring them along.
- Receipts for Deductions: Have you spent money on work-related clothes, tools, or made donations to charity? Bring those receipts!
- Spouse Details: If you have a partner, our volunteers will need a reasonable estimate of their taxable income for the year.
Setting up for success with myGov
Most tax returns are now lodged through the myGov portal linked to the ATO. If you haven't set up a myGov account yet, don't worry. We can help you with that. Our centre features a free use computer kiosk for anyone who needs assistance with the digital world. Our staff can help you create your account and link it to the ATO before your Tax Help appointment even starts.
