Books Books Books: How Our Op Shop Keeps Tumut Reading

Books Books Books series | Series 1
There is something special about finding a good book in an unexpected place.
You might be looking for a gentle weekend read, a story for a child, a practical guide or something completely different. You might have a favourite author in mind or simply want to browse until a cover catches your eye.
At the Tumut & District Neighbourhood Centre Op Shop, our second-hand books help make reading more accessible for people across Tumut and the surrounding districts. Stock changes regularly, so each visit offers a new opportunity to look, discover and take home something that interests you.
Browse affordable reading in Tumut
Our Op Shop includes second-hand books alongside a wide range of pre-loved goods. The selection changes as items come in and as books find new homes, which means there is always a reason to check back regularly.
You may find books suitable for:
- Quiet reading at home
- Children and families
- School-aged readers
- Learning and personal interests
- Gifts for friends or relatives
- Collecting, revisiting or sharing old favourites
- Passing on to someone who would enjoy a good story
We do not want to promise a particular title, author or category because stock is always changing. That is part of the fun of second-hand shopping. Visit the Op Shop, take your time and see what is available on the day.

Give books another chapter
A pre-loved book can continue its journey long after its first reader has finished with it.
When a book is passed on, it can become part of a new household, a child’s growing collection or a conversation between friends. It may be read from cover to cover, dipped into for information or kept on a shelf until the right moment arrives.
Second-hand books also offer a practical way to explore reading without needing to purchase everything new. You can try a different subject, return to a familiar story or pick up something outside your usual choices.
For families managing a tight budget, low-cost pre-loved goods can make everyday needs more manageable. For anyone who enjoys browsing, the Op Shop offers a chance to discover useful and interesting items while staying connected with a local community space.
Make reading more accessible
Reading access looks different for everyone.
Some people are searching for affordable books. Others may be looking for items at no cost during a difficult period. The Tumut & District Neighbourhood Centre provides quality second-hand books and other goods at low cost and supplies goods to people in need at no cost.
If you are unsure what support may be available, speak with our team. The Neighbourhood Centre offers information, advice, referrals and advocacy for people across our community. We can help you understand your options and connect you with appropriate referral pathways when further support is needed.
You can learn more about the services available through our Our Services page or contact the Centre before visiting.
Connect through a shared love of books
Books can bring people together in simple ways.
A recommendation can start a conversation. A children’s book can become part of a family routine. A practical book can help someone learn a new skill. A familiar story can provide comfort. A book found in an Op Shop can also become a thoughtful gift or a way to share an interest with someone else.
Our community includes individuals, families, children, young people, adults, elders, people with disability, culturally and linguistically diverse community members and community groups. Everyone is welcome to visit, browse and ask questions.
You do not need to be an expert reader or have a particular book in mind. Start with a wander through the shelves and see what speaks to you.

Please contact us before leaving donations. Do not leave donations on the porch without speaking with the Centre, as items left outside may be stolen, rummaged through or damaged. We appreciate your support and need to know where donations will be left so we can arrange collection when possible.
Please call 02 6947 2893 to discuss your donation and help us keep the area safe and manageable for our volunteers.
